Daan Utsav or the Joy of Giving Week is an annual giving festival celebrated in honour of Gandhi Jayanti. This festival encourages every individual to recognise their role in nation-building and making India a socially equitable country. You have the power to make a difference in this Daan Utsav.
In India today 140 million children attend government schools. While schools in urban areas have access to better infrastructure and are managed better, schools in the geographies that we serve — last-mile schools — are severely under-resourced. They are often located in rough and remote terrains that make access to basic amenities difficult. Sometimes, they have only one teacher who is expected to manage teaching across several grades and, at the same time, complete all the administrative duties as well.
At Adhyayan Quality Education Foundation, we imagine a country where young people feel a sense of responsibility towards their communities and planet; where they pursue things that truly interest them that not only earn them a decent living but also bring them a sense of meaning and joy. We imagine a society where we innovate together to solve some of the hardest problems. We imagine a country where people feel connected and cared for.
We have made a choice to we made to support government schools in vulnerable and under-supported regions that receive limited philanthropic funding. 90% of the schools we support have begun their journey to becoming the kind of schools where all children can thrive.
Mukondo Banik, the leader of a government school in rural Tripura, walked into one of the classrooms one day. He saw students listening passively to the teacher who was reading a lesson from the textbook. He noticed that the walls of the classroom were mostly bare. A couple of charts had been tacked on the walls but they were old and tearing at the corners.
Until recently, Mukondo Banik had never questioned this but after having attended the block-level meeting a few days ago, he was looking at his school with a fresh pair of eyes. At that meeting, he had met school leaders from the neighbouring schools and they had all discussed their progress against the national benchmark for school quality. The meeting had left him energized and determined to change things at his school.
His school was going to become part of a school complex as described in the NEP 2020. All the schools in the complex were going to support each other and share resources. What had seemed an uphill task now seemed very doable. He was looking forward to making an action plan with his teachers and making his school a model school in the future.
